Linux at 21: A new Linux Foundation t-shirt contest

Summary: Got design chops? Love Linux? Want to go to LinuxCon in San Diego or Barcelona, Spain later this year on the Linux Foundation’s dime? Read on.



The Linux Foundation, in honor of Linux’s 21st birthday is having another t-shirt competition. So, if you really love Linux, can make cool t-shirt designs (That leaves me right out), then this contest is for you!
This year the theme is “Inspired by Linux” and calls on people from around the world to create a design with that in mind.
You can find the complete rules here, but to cut to the chase, it needs to be an original design.

Red Hat preps Enterprise Linux 7 for late 2013

Linux pioneer credits Wall Street and move to subscription model for its recent strong results

 

 

The next major release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), version 7, is targeted for release in the second half of 2013, Red Hat said on Tuesday, as it also celebrated the tenth anniversary of its enterprise OS.
Red Hat aims to release a major new version of its OS every three years, and updates about every six months, according to Jim Totten, vice president and general manager at Red Hat's Platform business unit.
"While we are not at a place where we are making announcements ... our general target is the second half of 2013 to see RHEL 7 enter the marketplace," Totten said in a webcast.

Open-source media player VLC tops a billion downloads

Open-source staple VLC has reached over a billion downloads, the VideoLAN Organization announced Sunday.
For those who aren’t familiar with it, VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols. VLC works on Mac OS X, Windows, and most popular Linux distros, and has support for iOS. It’s kind of like a Swiss Army knife for video and audio in the sense that you can play virtually anything with it by downloading the proper codecs.

Top 50 Open Source Companies: Where Are They Now?

When The VAR Guy launched his website in January 2008, our resident blogger kept a super close eye on open source channel partner programs. At one point, The VAR Guy published the Open Source 50 — tracking how the top open source companies were working with VARs and IT service providers. So whatever happened to each of the 50 companies in that annual list?

New data points to demand for Linux skills, training in Asia

With the Linux Foundation Enterprise End User Summit coming up on April 30, we revisited the data collected for our Linux Adoption Trends report to find some of the global trends among enterprise Linux users.
While the report published in January focused on large enterprises with more than $500 million in sales or 500+ employees, this previously unreleased data highlights regional trends among enterprise users in Europe and Asia.
For the most part the regional data showed similar patterns of adoption with large enterprise users. But one result in particular stood out.
More than 34 percent of 257 organizations surveyed in Asia cited finding trained developers and/or systems administrators as the top factor impeding Linux from having more success. That’s about double the percentage of large enterprises (17.6 percent) and European enterprises (16.3 percent) that listed finding talent as the top impediment.
